Welcome to Savory Highlights. Time for another look at what’s been happening in the REAL food world. Summer is ending, kids are back to school, and life goes on. Happy to be on this journey of life.
Here are a few things that I LOVED this month:
Starting on the road to healthy, clean eating can be daunting. Homemade Mommy shared a great post on 30 Tips for Real Food Newbies.
Also to get you started eating well, Real Food Kosher shared 9 Essential Grain-Free and Paleo Recipes that are staples in a REAL food diet.
I am on a research kick this month. I’m determined to learn about why so many people are having so many different health issues. Hypothyroidism is something that I see a lot. And did you know that it is often undiagnosed? Health Extremist wrote a great article on the causes of hypothyroidism and common symptoms.
I believe that good eating habits develop early. So give your little ones the best that you can offer. Skip the baby cereal, and read what Oh Lardy! has to say about feeding grains to your baby. Mindful Mama also gave us 10 Tips to Feed Your Baby a Nutrient-Dense Diet.
With cold and flu season just around the corner, time to start thinking about keeping the family healthy. Real Food RN shares a natural remedies round up with over 100 DIY Remedies for Cold, Flu, and Everything Else.
20 Something Allergies also gives us an alternative to the flu vaccine: Plague Tonic. Be sure to stock this this winter.
For those chocolate lovers out there, there is a healthy option. Girl Meets Nourishment posted an awesome recipe for Avocado Chocolate Pudding.
Vaccines are always a controversial topic. Holistic Squid takes a look at the idea of herd immunity and are you really protected?
I get a ton of questions about the different types of gelatin. Butter Nutrition gives the low down in this gelatin primer.
Bothered by heartburn? Craig from Fearless Eating wrote a great guest post for Empowered Sustenance on why eating more fat can help your heartburn. Another topic that western medicine has all wrong.
There really is no excuse not to exercise. Your body really needs it and will thank you. Jules’ Fuel shares with us 19 Ways to Add Exercise (for the busy, over-worked, and traveling.)
Primally Inspired shared a time-saving crock pot recipe that my family loved: Slow Cooker Chipotle Pork with Pineapple Slaw.
The most creative recipe of the month: Meat Bagels from Ditch the Wheat. Skip the bread and make your “bagel” out of ground meat. Brilliant!
And of course, something from Chris Kresser, my favorite investigative researcher. Ever hear from vegan or Paleo folks that milk causes osteoporosis? Well, Chris shared an article this about just that: Does Dairy Cause Osteoporosis?
Enjoy the last bits of summer, everyone.

Thanks for posting my 10 Tips to Feed Your Baby a Nutrient-Dense Diet!!! This post is really close to my heart as it has fortified our 3rd baby’s health. He was adopted at 2 weeks old and I was so nervous he would not be healthy….following the basic traditional diet principles as I spell out in this article has built his little (big) body to be strong and resilient! I really do hope it is an encouragement to those mamas who feel so confused as to how to feed their baby, and how to help PREVENT all of these chronic childhood problems! Thanks again- love your site– the new theme is beautiful!! <3 Mindful Mama
