Welcome to REAL Food Books, my series about books that inspire me on my own personal REAL food journey. Today I am talking about From Scratch, by Shaye of the Elliott Homestead. Shaye has written a book about making food from scratch, from local, simple ingredients that nourish and heal the body. Have you been over to her blog? If you haven’t you should. Shaye and her family have moved to the Pacific Northwest to start a small farm, and her blog is the chronicle of one family’s journey to eating REAL food, From Scratch.
Simply Lovely…
That is how I would describe this book. The cover begins this warm and endearing look at what REAL food looks like. Shaye has an amazingly sweet and energy about her that welcomes the reader into her kitchen. The photography is beautiful and realistic. You really get a look at what these recipes look like. The recipes themselves are easy and appetizing.
The books is more than a collection of recipes. It is a manual on how to traditionally prepare REAL food for your family, from start to finish. Shaye starts by showing us how she stocks her kitchen, introducing us to the staples, and then gives ideas on how to source our food locally. The recipe pages move from breakfast, to bread, to dinner, and condiments. It’s all in there.
What You Will Learn:
- How to stock your pantry so you can easily make food from scratch every day
- Sourcing organic and local foods
- How to traditionally prepare foods for proper digestion and health
- Tons of recipes for breakfast, dinner, snacks, desserts, fermented foods, drinks, and condiments
My favorites:
There are so many amazing recipes in this book. Some of my favorites include:
- Almond and Lemon Tart
- Pear Tart with Cinnamon and Cream
- Chicken Soup with Coconut and Cilantro
- Spiced Meatball Soup with Cabbage
- Slow Cooker Asian Short Ribs
I’m serious when I say that this is my favorite cook book EVER. I was so impressed when I heard that this is her first cookbook. Amazingly sweet and refreshingly efficient, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about REAL food and making food from scratch. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Shaye gives us the tools and some realistic advice on how to make it work. I’m actually making the Roasted Butternut Squash Sauce for dinner tonight, served over chicken and greens. I’m drooling already…

I initially got the e-book as part of the End-of-Summer Bundle from VGN, but recently ordered the hard copy to sit on the kitchen shelf. I use it that much. I have also ordered 2 copies as house warming gifts for friends. What better way to warm up a house than home cooking.
