Welcome to Savory Highlights, my monthly post where we take a look at what’s been happening in the REAL food world. July has been an abundant month around here. Peaches galore, pears starting to come in, and blackberries starting to ripen. I’m humbled and grateful for the blessings from the garden. Enjoy every delicious moment!!!
Little One loves blackberry season:
Here are some posts from the past month that you may want to check out:
I’m really curious about why so many folks are having thyroid problems these days. It seems to be getting so commons. The Nourished Life shares 10 foods that affect the thyroid—for better or worse.
As a parent, I am concerned about the types of foods my kids eat. And I am saddened that mainstream advice is to start your babies on grain cereals at a very young age. Babies do not produce enough amylase to break down carbs until closer to a year. The Elliott Homestead shares a great post on best first foods for baby and how to make them.
Think you don’t have time to workout? Think again. Jules’ Fuel shared 8 great workouts that you can do in under 15 minutes. Check it out. It will kick your butt.
Our choices in what we eat are very personal. And there are many schools of thought around eating meat or not eating meat. Fearless Eating shared well-thought out post on the ethics of meat eating.
There are so many folks who are still afraid of eating salt. For years, the recommendation has been to eat a low salt diet to reduce the risks for high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Ironically, a low salt diet can make these conditions even worse. Empowered Sustenance shared an informative post on why salt is good for you.
Along the same lines, low fat diets have been a HUGE failure in the scheme of human health. As saturated fats disappeared from the American diet being replaced by highly processed vegetable oil, heart disease and obesity have sky-rocketed. It’s really hard to change dogma that has been taught for so long, even if i’s completly incorrect. Our Nourishing Roots shares an awesome post on why saturated fats and cholesterol DO NOT give you heart disease.
Anyone else have runaway zucchinis in the garden? You blink, and they become enormous. Luckily, this month The Sprouting Seed shared a great recipe for zucchini fritters.
I love avocados. Wish I could grow a tree here where I live. Tasty Yummies shared an awesome dairy-free Creamy Avocado Dressing recipe that is divine.
PMS, anyone? If you suffer from PMS, this post may be for you. Girl Meets Nourishment shares 5 Foods that feed the PMS Monster.
Have you guys ever check out the Holistic Squid? Emily has so many good things to say. This month she shared a post on the selenium/mercury connection and why we may not have to worry so much about mercury in fish. Yay for sushi!! She also wrote a great post on why she doesn’t give her kids multivitamins.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, ya’ll!
