Turmeric is one of my favorite spices. I use it almost daily in my cooking. Lately I have been even adding it to my morning smoothies. And I love it. My teenager has even developed a taste for it. The body knows what is good. This morning’s delight was my Creamy Tropical Turmeric Smoothie.
I have to say that I am totally enjoying being on a REAL food journey with my oldest daughter (who will turn 18 this summer.) She has recently become more concerned with the foods that she puts into her body and has been eating a totally clean Paleo diet. This means that we have been spending a lot of time together in the kitchen preparing nutrient-dense foods and yummy treats. It feels really good to have my own child preparing a hearty breakfast of sauteed greens, sweet potatoes, eggs, and sauerkraut for the family. Makes a mama proud.
One of the things we talk about is how healthy eating is more than a diet. It is a lifestyle. It’s wonderful to see her not only eating well but taking care of herself in many other ways as well. She lifts weights and exercises a lot. I see her making an effort to get more sleep. And she just seems happier. The veil of the teenage years is lifting and I am seeing a beautiful, mature, young woman emerging.
Oh, yeah. Back to that yummy smoothie. This morning I made us a delicious, anti-inflammatory smoothie. It was full of creamy coconut milk, sweet pineapple and banana, healthy coconut fat, and some grass fed collagen peptide ( a form of gelatin that dissolves easily in cold liquids) and hemp seeds for protein (about 14 grams total.) Fresh ginger and turmeric add the anti-inflammatory punch.
Turmeric is something we should all have more of in our lives. Inflammation is the root of many chronic conditions, and turmeric is great at putting out that internal fire. Not only is it anti-inflammatory, it also has been shown to be antioxidant, to block cancer cells, to reduce the risk for diabetes, and to be good for the liver.
I tend to favor fresh turmeric, but if you can’t find it, turmeric powder works just fine. Read more HERE about the awesome health benefits of turmeric.
Oh, and did you know that adding just a pinch of black pepper to your turmeric will increase the bioavailability of curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) by over 2,000%. So even though it may sound a bit odd, I like to add a pinch of black pepper to this smoothie. Totally optional, ya’ll!
Hope you are all having a wonderful spring time. I look forward to sharing more of our delicious morning smoothies and juices with you as the warmer weather makes me want to bust out the vitamix. Looking forward to all of the summer fruits and berries.

Notes
If you are new to turmeric, it’s best to start out small. Add just a titch to your smoothie and see how you like it. You can always add more. Too much can be a bit bitter. My experience is that the body quickly develops a taste for this healing spice.

This does sound delicious, especially with cilantro!
I seem to have recently developed a sensitivity to pineapple- it makes my throat scratchy and a bit swollen. Any recommendations for a replacement?
Katja says
can you do mango? I have also used peaches. 🙂

This looks really good! I love turmeric too! I had some acupuncture a while back from a very knowledgeable doctor that recommended I add turmeric to my diet to help with inflammation. I’m going to blend this up later today before I head into work for my nightshift!

This is very delicious. I try to use Turmeric and Ginger on a daily basis, but never tried it in a smoothie! A wonderful
combination. I changed it a bit because of what I had on hand. Used almond milk, a few pieces of coconut chips, coconut oil, a banana, frozen pineapple, frozen ginger and a few lime pieces that I had from flavoring my water, cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of my golden milk turmeric mixture and hemp hearts. Absolutely wonderful result! Thank you for sharing. The cilantro sounds also very good with it and gets some greens in!
