Over $300 worth of awesome goodies for $150.
Today we are going to learn about Thieves Oil. It is Young Living’s most popular oil- and with good reason. Thieves oil is a unique blend of clove, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus, and rosemary that has been used for years and years for it’s supporting and protecting properties. It was developed based on a recipes used by 15th century thieves who used the oils to keep from contracting the plague while robbing the dead. Research has since proven the powerful qualities of theses oils to fight harmful microorganisms. In fact, Thieves oil was tested by Weber State University in Utah in 1997, and found to kill 99% of airborne bacteria when diffused into a room.
Thieves oil is super easy to incorporate into your household. I use it for so many things. Here’s a few simple ways to support and protect yourself in order to stay healthy.
8 Ways to Stay Healthy With Thieves Oil
1. Supports the immune system:
I like to Rub Thieves oil onto the bottoms of my feet to support my immune system, especially if I have been exposed to an illness. Be sure to dilute with a carrier oil for children. I rub it on my little one’s feet before she goes to preschool.
2. Purify the air:
We diffuse Thieves Oil with a home diffuser. I love this method as everyone in the room enjoys the health-promoting benefits this way. I recently ordered a second diffuser for my home.
3. Hand cleaner:
Cleanse little hands without harsh chemicals by using a Thieves Oil hand cleaner. Young Living sells one on their website, or you can make your own easily at home with aloe vera gel, Thieves Oil, and a titch of water to thin it out.
4. Household cleaning:
Keep your counter tops and other surface clean with a simple Thieves Oil cleaner. I like to add 5-6 drops of Thieves Oil to water in a spray bottle. That’s it. You can use this on any surface. It is recommended to use glass spray bottles for essential oils. Empty apple cider vinegar bottles work well for this.
5. Gargle with it:
I will like to gargle with 1 drop of Thieves oil in water in 8 ounces of water and a pinch of salt. I find this the most effective way to use Thieves essential oil as it absorbs easily into the mucous membranes while you gargle. It is very supportive to the respiratory and immune systems.
6. Respiratory support:
I like to dilute Thieves Oil with a carrier oil and massage over my chest and lower back. Adding a warn compress over the chest for a few minutes will amplify the effect. I diffuse Thieves Oil as well.
7. Clean dishes:
Clean your kitchen by adding a couple drops of Thieves Oil to your dishwasher or dish water in the sink. No need for harmful chemicals to keep your family safe.
8. Personal roll-on blend:
I carry a personal roll-on blend with a mix of carrier oil and thieves oil in my purse. I apply liberally to the back of my neck and feet if I’m in crowded places or around sick people. This is great while traveling. I made one for my oldest daughter who just took off traveling for 3 months. I get my roll-on bottles HERE

That was awesome, I’m hoping you will post like this on every single E/O starting with oils from starter kit & then all the others…seriously loved this, so helpful. Thank You, Judy
Katja says
So glad you liked it. I am planning on doing more from the starter kit. I love my essential Oils. 🙂
Amy says
What is the mixture for a roll on bottle for adults?
Katja Heino says
I usually start with a 2% ratio for adults, which means 2 drop of essential oil per tsp of carrier oil. If this feels too strong or irritating in any way, simply dilute with more carrier oil. Some folks have very sensitive skin, so starting with a 1% dilution ratio may be better, meaning 1 drop of essential oil per tsp of carrier oil. Hope that helps.
Carol says
I am new to essential oils…how can I make a roll on and how often do you apply?
Carol says
Just saw above post….thanks!!
Katja Heino says
Every oil is different. But rule of thumb is to start small. 1 drop per tsp of carrier oil at first. See how you react. You can work up to more. Oils can be applied frequently as your body metabolizes them quickly. Hope that helps.
Samantha S says
How many drops do you put in your roll on?
Katja says
I start with 1-2 drops per tsp. A little goes a long way. See how you do with that. You can always add more!
Kristin says
Thanks for this!
Kelly says
Hi! Is 9 months too young to use Thieves if diluted heavily? Thanks!!
Katja says
I definitely know folks who use Thieves in little ones that young. My personal recommendation is to use oils that are better suited for smaller babies. I started using Thieves HEAVILY diluted after 2 years old and just in the diffuser. For a foot rub, I used this—> https://www.savorylotus.com/wellness-foot-rub/
Lil T says
Thanks for the information. How do you make a spray bottle from an apple cider vinegar bottle (what top goes with it)? Do you gargle the whole 8 ounces of water?
Katja says
Most spray tops from other cleaning bottles fit on the glass ACV bottles. And Yes, I do gargle with the whole glass of water. A little bit at a time. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
meiling says
I rub it on my 10yr old boy without diltuting, is it ok? As i dont have carrier oil
Katja Heino says
It is always best to dilute Thieves essential oil. It is a very potent oil and can be irritating. You can use olive oil as a carrier oil. Or coconut. Or any good quality oil you have. With children, I would do a 2% dilution rate – meaning 1 drop of essential oil to 1 tsp of carrier oil.
Eva says
can i use this on my face ?
Katja Heino says
Hi, Eva! The oils in Thieves are very strong and potent. I tend to keep it away from my face, especially my eyes. Best places is the feet. The skin is noce and think. I do use it on my throat if I need some extra support in that area. Just be sure to dilute, dilute, dilute! Hope that helps!
Linda Fleming says
Your directions are the most helpful I have read. Most are so vague and give no ratios for deluting them.. Some are totally condridicting until I had become wary of using at all.
Katja Heino says
I get it! There is so much info out there about EO’s. I try to keep it simple. Thanks so much for stopping by!
Caroline says
Once you put thieves oil on your feet with a carrier oil should you put socks on or keep it open to air?
Katja Heino says
Hi, Caroline! I do both. If I’m going to walking around, I cover with socks so I don’t slip. If I am just relaxing, I leave them open to air. 🙂
Debbie Forrester says
Wonderful list of uses! Do the roll-on bottles you have listed above fit the roller fitments YL sells?
Katja Heino says
Hi, Debbie! Unfortunately the metal roller fitments from YL are too big for these perfume rollers.
Debbie Forrester says
So, do you have any ideas on where can I find bottles, metal or glass, to fit the YL fitments OR fitments that fit the Amazon bottles?
Katja Heino says
Hi, Debbie! You can just reuse your 15ml YL bottles after you are done with the oils to make rollers. I haven’t seen metal rollers for the perfume bottles that I use. I wish! These glass bottle come with metal roller but it’s not 100% metal >>>>> http://amzn.to/1pAoZLe
Hope that help!
Angela ludwig says
Will this oil work on sciatica or any type of muscle pain
Katja Heino says
Hi, Angela! I have not heard of using Thieves for pain. If you are looking to support the body in that way, I would look into Copaiba and PanAway. Young Living also makes a wonderful blend called Deep Relief that I love to use to post work out soreness.
Susie says
what is the best mixture for hypothyroidism? I was given thieves, frankensce with olive oil… Also, how much and how often do I use it?
Katja Heino says
I haven’t heard of using Thieves for hypothyroidism. Here is some great info that may be helpful. Not oil related but good. It’s a free online book. https://chriskresser.com/thyroid/
peggy says
For the hand cleaner, how much aloe vera gel do you use and how many drops of Theives oil and how much water? Thank you.
Katja Heino says
Hi, Peggy!
I just fill my little bottle with aloe vera. Thin with a bit of water so it comes out easily. And 4-5 drops of Thieves. 🙂
Leah says
To make a spray mist let say 2oz of water how many drops of thieves oil and how often to use it to prevent from flu season? Thanks
Katja Heino says
I would start with 8-10 drops. I would also add add a teaspoon of witch hazel. Use often. I use my roller several times daily in winter, especially if I’m around sick people.
Marganne lammar says
Great information, I am hooked on Thieves! I truly believe I will stay healthy this coming season!
Katja Heino says
I’m a bit thieves obsessed myself. Especially this time of year!!
Dinna says
Will thieves help after you already have a cold?
Katja Heino says
It is always good to help support your immune system. I use it all winter long, including when i get a cold. 🙂
Sia says
Hi.. your number 5 said thieves absorbs easily to mucous membrame but I read in the caution on the label of thievs it said avoid contact with eyes and mucous membrane?
Katja Heino says
HI, Sia! I totally understand the confusion. You are right. Thieves should never be put directly onto mucous membranes. It is too strong and would irritate them. When I use Thieves as a gargle, I am putting one drop in a glass of water so it it VERY diluted. It does not irritate my mouth at all. But it does absorb nicely and is very effective. I would never put Thieves directly into my mouth or any other mucous membrane. 🙂
Crystal Mitchell says
Do you dilute thieves before you put on your feet?
Katja Heino says
Yes, I do. I always dilute my oil before I apply. Just my personal preference and practice. 🙂
Mary Kingdon says
Hi, I really enjoyed reading the different for Thieves. It is one of my go to oils. It is also good for killing ants along with Lemongrass. I keep a spray glass bottle in my kitchen and bathroom.
Katja Heino says
That’s good to know about the ants. Thanks!
